“Just stay calm…deep breaths now, in…and out …in… out…you’re gonna be fine.” The words came out automatically, but with the same compassionate tone that Jenna had always used on her patients, her voice was calm and controlled giving the impression to the patient that they were in capable hands; sometimes it worked, and other times they just continued to panic, just like this young man who was bleeding profusely from a Lycan claw to the gut…
The inexperienced group of fairly young Malkavians had been patrolling the outskirts of their base; it wasn’t routine procedure, the Malkavians kept their teams grounded until needed, not sending them out all over to be set upon in an ambush. But these young ones had decided they knew best and had slipped from the Malkavian stronghold just as darkness descended and the pearly grey evening settled into blackness.
Malkavian operations had received a garbled, broken transmission and sent out a team to rescue the ambushed young ones; it had only taken one stealthy Lycan to take them down one by one. Jenna had been sleeping fitfully after a long day caring for her rather boisterous son Joshua, when she’d been called up, telling her eldest daughter Lauren, who’d been watching some soppy romance on TV, to keep an eye on the others as she headed down to the underground garages where Ricky awaited with his three man squad
“Jenna, bought time to, let’s get a move on people.” He cried clapping his hands together and jumping into the driving seat of a suped up van, Jenna slid into the seat beside him whilst the others dived into the back. “What have we got then Rickster?”
“Youngsters thinking they can take on Vamps and Lycans by themselves,” he replied with a rough shake of his head, “they’ll never learn.” The van sped out of the underground complex and he cranked up the gears taking them speedily along their way as they were told directions into their earpieces.
It didn’t take long to reach their destination; one of the many dark alleyways as the three young Malkavians hadn’t gotten very far at all before they’d been set upon by the ferocious Lycan bent on tearing them limb from limb, and it would have succeeded if the one lad hadn’t been a little more alert than his fellows and scorched the creature flinging balls of fire to engulf it, but not before it had managed to gut his fellows and drive it’s deadly claw into his abdomen as it convulsed in its death throes the team had arrived on the scene making sure it was definitely finished off.
“Looks like we made it just in time,” quipped the ever smiling Alec, nothing seemed to put him in bad spirits. Jenna had immediately set to work on the young man, asking Ricky and Alec to help her gently pull the claw from out of the lad’s wound, “what’s your name love?” She asked giving him a little smile to show she was there for him,
“Zack,” he managed to mutter grimacing as he winced from the pain as the claw was removed with some difficulty.
“Well Zack I’ll get you healed in no time, so sit back and relax…”
Hands pressed to the lad’s chest she pushed him gently back against the wall that he had slumped against under the heavy weight of the Lycan. Nothing visibly appeared to happen at first, though slowly Zack began to look less deathly pale and Jenna began to look weary her look of concentration plain as her mind focused purely upon healing the 21 year old of his injuries. The whole process took a good ten minutes and it took Jenna’s absolute concentration to get it perfectly right, she wasn’t going to heal quickly and risk a botched job, Zack definitely wouldn’t thank her for that. So Jenna was quite oblivious to what was going on around her, as Zack’s eyes closed from the exertion of healing, it was tiring them both quite utterly, but eventually it was finished and Jenna caught Zack’s head before it slumped upon the ground, lowering it gently and rubbing her own face to keep from falling asleep; healing really took it out of you sometimes. Looking up she saw only Alec still stood at her shoulder, “yeh we’ve got a bit of a situation, there appears to be a few Lycans homing in on our position.” Perhaps Alec was a little too calm in such circumstances, Jenna immediately slipped Zack’s arm about her neck saying, “come on Alec help me get him up.” With Jenna supporting him on his left and Alec on his right, Zack was carried back down the cramped alleyway towards the van waiting at the end. They stumbled along dragging the dead weight of the unconscious man, but they weren’t quick enough as fast footfalls could be heard behind them; the padding of Lycan paws making just enough noise to frighten their prey into panicking, but the Malkavians had a little trick up their sleeve; Ricky had selected his team for the situation; he was a master of Telekinesis, which he was now using to hold a Lycan in place, whilst Lucy adept with Electral Generation smited it down and Patrick sent surges of energy to hold the other Lycans back allowing Ricky and Lucy to neutralise each in turn. They couldn’t summon enough energy to kill the Lycans outright but they’d awaken much later battered and bruised which should be long enough for the Malkavians to make good their escape. As the fighters held the Lycans back Jenna and Alec set down the prone form of Zack into the back of the van as Patrick jumped in slamming the doors behind him Lucy and Ricky dived into the front and set the vehicle into motion, heading directly back for Headquarters, it had been a close run thing and Jenna wondered if taking the time to heal Zack there and then had been the best option, for they weren’t out of the woods yet; anything could happen, and the unexpected probably would as the van screeched about a corner hurtling down a busier street then turning off to take a shortcut down another rather cramped alley to get back as quickly as possible. Perhaps the long, safer route might have been the best option...
