He tossed and turned in his sleep, anyone who shared a bed with him knew that. Sunlight flooded through the open curtains, groaning, he pulled the quilt further over his head. He did not want to wake up. Deryn had been out last night and the hangover was bad enough with his eyes closed, he didnt want to think about what it would be like if he opened his eyes. The birds outside the window tweeted and Deryn could hear the sounds of the street, a motorbike roaring down it, sending vibrations through Deryn's head. It was hell. His head felt like it was going to explode in the fewest of moments.
A loud nouse directly beside him woke the man from his slumber as he jumped up like he had been eletrictued. Though realising it was only his phone he pulled it towards him but did not recognise the name that came up on the screen, it must have been someone he gave his number drunkinly too last night. With a yawn he answered it, a very groggy, "Hello" coming from the man and his voice was rather throaty, possibly making the Scots man a little more difficult to understand. "Deryn, Its Kat!" Frowning as he heard the females voice on the other end of the phone, he didnt know anybody called Kat. "Yeah I know, It came up on my phone." He said with a yawn. Pushing back the covers Deryn slowly got out of bed. "Sorry about rushing out this morning," She began, "Its just I had work and I was already late, I was going to leave a note but I couldnt see any paper or a pen." Wait, she had spent the night? "Oh," Deryn said rather taken aback, "Its alright dont worry about it sweet." "Maybe we could meet up again sometime?" "Uh... Yeah maybe" "Great! Give me a call sometime!" "Sure, I will"
With a click, Deryn hung up the phone but stared at it for a few minutes. Who the bloody hell is Kat? She had obviously spent the night here but Deryn couldnt remember. Which showed one of two things, either he was really that drunk, or it really was not anything worth remembering. He put the phone back on his bedside table and got up, dressing himself in a green jacket and brown pants. His phone bleeped so, once he had dressed himself he went back to it. He had a message from Vince, a guy he works with.
Yo, Logan! Its Vinnie. Nick called in sick, Dont know whats up with him he wouldnt say but Harold is furious with him. I wonder what he will do to him? You know Harold has a short temper mate and you know as well as me what he can do. Anyway, Harold says you have to cover his shift! You're on night watch with me tonight. See you later!
Deryn groaned. This was his only day off in two months! He read the text again, why on earth he had to have a phone he would never know. Though still, even if he didnt they would have found a way to call him in. Deryn sat down on his bed after taking some painkillers. He would have to have a few hours kip in a bit or he would not be able to do the nightshift. He knew all too well Nick was becoming less and less reliable and there was a load of rumours why. Though Logan never really paid much attention to rumours.
Yo Vinnie. Nick is becoming a loose cannon and Harold's gonna get rid of him if he aint careful! I dont know what Harold will do but you can bet it will not be pleasant. Ah, My one day off and im called into work. Brilliant. Not. Tell ya what, If Harry doesnt kill Nick, I bloody well will. I'll see you later mate.
Deryn could not believe he had to work tonight. It really wound him up but if he said no to Harold then he would get a load of flank. Hearing the doorbell go, he stood up and walked through his bedroom and down the hall. Opening the door, he stood there for a minute.

It was nights like the night she’d just had that made Jenna wonder why on earth she’d ever had children, it was a fleeting thought brought about from annoyance at the nights events but Jenna was already feeling the awful guilt welling up inside of her; when Rebecca had arrived home at 6 o’clock that morning Jenna had been waiting in the kitchen for her daughter and her soft eyes had shown none of their usual warmth and compassion on beholding the return of her ever elusive daughter. Suffice to say Jenna hadn’t really slept well that night when at about 3 in the morning she’d received a garbled call from one of Rebecca’s friends, to cut a long and confused explanation short she didn’t know where Rebecca had actually disappeared to, last she’d seen she’d been with this hot guy…
Worried sick Jenna acted as all mothers did in such a circumstance; she’d panicked first then ended up worrying herself silly until Rebecca’s key turned in the lock. Torn between wanting to hug and strangle her daughter Jenna had opted for a fierce bear hug as she’d cried “don’t ever do that to me again,” for the twentieth; she really would never learn, Becky wouldn’t change for anyone, not even her mother. One thing Jenna did respect was how Becky would always proceed to tell her every little detail; including the things she probably would have preferred not knowing, but at least she didn’t keep anything from her, Jenna was just told everything after it happened. So Jenna listened with mouth suitably agape as her daughter regaled how their eyes had met across the crowded dancefloor and he’d of course paid for all her drinks and was such a gent, then such a gentle lover too. Keeping her expression carefully blank as she was told this Jenna had to wonder at her, she was pretty sure that everything was glossed over slightly, but Jenna had done that herself countless times when telling her friends of her late nights out too, so in that way they were alike, Jenna wouldn’t quite have told her mother everything, but things had been rather different back then, way back then and it would most definitely not have been appropriate to divulge all the fine details. Becky had no such qualms though and told Jenna everything; most importantly the guys name; eureka just what Jenna had been waiting for, bustling her daughter off to go get some sleep, for though she had worried the whole night through she was forgiving when it came to it; Becky just had to give one of those winning smiles that she’d inherited from her father and both parents could be putty in her hands. Shooing Becky off for a few hours kip; she’d have to work later for penance Jenna guessed she’d first call the guy up, as she usually did but she’d already left the house and was halfway to the culprits before she’d even thought about calling him.
Yes Jenna was protective of her children, and besides it was law that she meet this guy, even though she guessed it would be a one night stand she wanted to make it crystal clear to him that her daughter was not to be messed around further, that was the problem, Jenna couldn’t just sit back and let Becky deal with it, she felt compelled to get involved something, a trait that Thomas had fallen out with her over many times.
Now luckily for Jenna her mothering duty had been made even easier as Becky had even let slip the street name, she really did go into too much depth, Jenna had a feeling she’d been quite proud that he’d lived in a slightly posher area of Manchester, and then she’d also mentioned his door had been red and another of other little things to identify his house correctly.
So it was that the mother of the girl he’d slept with the night before; the girl he couldn’t even remember he’d been so blind drunk, was now stood at his door, now Jenna was sorely tempted to start berating him as soon as he opened the door, demanding admittance and then beginning a long lecture telling him exactly what he could and couldn’t do with her daughter; but she knew better than that, sure she’d turned up at his door, but it wasn’t necessarily because she was a control freak, rathermore that she had to make sure her daughter was safe and that this young man knew nothing of her powers; that was the real crux of the matter. That she was nosey and wanted to see how well her daughter was scoring was just an aside really, smiling she greeted the young man cheerfully, the young man who looked decidedly hungover. Now to see if he was a womanizer, as she was paranoid that all guys were sometimes, at least the ones that slept with Becky for her looks, and if he actually even remembered her daughter at all; “hiya Deryn. Remember me? We met the other week in Underworld, you promised you’d see me again but haven’t returned any of my calls…I was just wondering…why?” Jenna bit her lip making it seem she were anxious and that it had taken a lot of guts to come out with it, though she couldn’t easily hide the deadly gleam in her eye.
Now to sit back and judge his reaction, Jenna curled a lock of her hair as she waited for his response wondering quite what excuse he’d come up with.

Deryn's eyebrows raised as a woman stood infront of him, one he did not recognise and knew it couldnt be Kat. He had one hand on the door, and the other one hung limply by his side. He opened his mouth a few times as though attempting to speak, though clearly failing and instead looking like a fish, which wasnt an attractive look believe me. Deryn tried to put a name to the face, but for the life of him he couldnt, yet something was telling him she was familiar somehow. His brow furrowed in confusion. "I uh... Well its... Uh." Deryn stammered, he was clearly out of his depth here. Maybe Vinnie was right, maybe the guy shouldnt get as blind drunk as he usually does. Maybe this was a trick, maybe she was someone who was friends with someone he had slept with. Or maybe she was Kat's friend. The cogs were ticking trying to place a name with the face. Deryn closed his eyes tightly as the clous shifted and let a burst of sunlight through, hitting him square in the face, causing him to groan in pain.
He turned on his heel, and with the hand that wasnt clinging to his head, he beckoned the woman in and went into the kitchen. Pouring himself some water and taking some asprin, then proceeding to put the kettle on, he could usually function on one cup, but after a night like last night, and knowing he was in work tonight, he wouldnt last the day, let alone the night if he didnt have a good few cups of coffee, and he knew Veldon would be less than pleased with him. He waited until the woman followed him in and began pouring two mugs of coffee, "You do drink coffee right?" he asked. Truth be told he couldnt remember if she did or she didnt. Of course he didnt know he had never met this woman before, only her daughter, but what Deryn wouldnt know, couldnt hurt him or anyone else. His eyes went down to her hand as he caught a little dazzle of light coming off it, realising soon it was a wedding ring, he went into a little panic. "Y-your Married!?" He stammered as he looked at her in bewhilderment. Now he was sure he would remember sleeping with a married woman, he never slept with married women. Though, get a few drinks down his neck, Deryns moral's went out the window.
He sat down at the kitchen table, put his head in his hands and began to mumble things to himself. He tried to remember the other week in the Underworld Club, but it was like holding water in your bare hands, the more you tried to cling to the memories, the more they slipped away and Deryn coul not remember this woman for the life of him. He supposed if remembering her was a life or death situation, he would be dead by now. Taking his head out of his hands, he ran them through his hair and leant back on the chair. His brown eyes scanning the table as though it would give him some answers, unfortunatly for him, the table remained silent. He had half a mind to text Vinnie and ask what he should do, but one, that would be rude, and two, what would he say? A married woman claiming to have slept with me or something has shown up at my house, what do I do? No, he would figure this out himself and maybe laugh about it later, but for now, he had to say something.
"Listen," He began, "I'm going to be honest with you. I have absolutley no idea who you are." He looked down into his coffee, and took a deep breath. It wasnt like Deryn made a habit of sleeping with married women, sure there had been a couple, most of whom he had regretted almost instantly and never spoke to again, so this was a new situation for him. "Though a promise is a promise." He said with a slight smile, meaning if he promised he would see her again, then he would. Though Deryn had his share of one night stands, if he made a promise, he would keep it. Of course, he only had this womans word that he had promised to see her again, but even so. "I'll take you out tomorrow night if your free, and if its alright with you." Then with a rather embarrassed and timid voice, he added, "Could you remind me your name?"

If the situation hadn't been so serious Jenna would have laughed, and she knew she would later, but right now she had to keep a straight face and keep up with the act; until the time was right. Her eyes twinkled in merriment at the look of purest confusion upon his poor face, his furrowed brow showed he was trying desperately to remember her, of course he'd have no joy and Jenna nearly gave up the delusion then on seeing him squirm so.
Resisting the urge to kiss him on the cheek as she was admitted into his home, she quelled the desire knowing that embarrassing him wouldn't really help things when he found out who she was, as he would have to eventually. The far greater urge was in fact to support him as he near tottered back down the hall for Jenna's heart went out to him, momentarily dreading he was ill, until she remembered the fact that he'd probably brought it on himself through excessive drinking and was solely suffering from a hangover; he'd receive no healing from her then that was for sure. Following him through into the kitchen Jenna couldn't stop the alarming images of how the pair had probably stumbled in footless drunk in each others arms last night, she could see those arms wrapped about her daughter and so it was with some pleasure that she replied quite cooly, "I'm allergic to coffee beans, I thought you'd have remembered that at least," she spoke drily her eyes never leaving him as she studied his expression, following his eyes to...oh damnit; her ring why the hell hadn't she taken it off before beginning this ridiculous charade that was doomed to failure anyway. Blushing Jenna's look of shock was a picture as she clutched her fingers coming up with an excuse on the spot, "uhm...I..I didn't want you to know," looking sorry for herself but really just berating herself for forgetting about the glorious ring upon her finger; she really did take it for granted she muttered, "I'm sorry for tricking you, I didn't want you to treat me differently." You'll be in for an even greater suprise in a minute, she thought with the tiniest hint of a smile gracing her features as she stared at her feet as if repentant.
Pretending to look put out she looked up alarmed when he admitted he hadn't a clue who she was Jenna was about to put him out of his misery when he affirmed that "a promise is a promise" and she sorely hoped that he meant it and wasn't just saying it to get out of a sticky situation, if he'd promised anything to Becky he'd better keep to it. Again about to open her mouth she was forstalled as he came out with an unlikely proposition, immediately Jenna laughed shaking her head ruefully, actually giggling as his voice became small and he sounded utterly embarrassed; just what she'd wanted.
"Don't worry Deryn, you don't need to go out with me, I'd have to politely refuse even if you wanted to, which I find hard to imagine, as I do have an," she struggled a moment to find a suitable word to describe Thomas; "...adoring husband and beautiful children. It isn't me that you know, but my daughter Rebecca, and so it isn't me you've slept with but her." Smiling Jenna waited a moment for the words to sink in, "so you tell me what's worse, the truth that I'm the angry mother of the daughter you've likely forgotten and won't even have the decency to call back, or what you first feared, that I was a married woman that you'd so foolishly slept with."
Jenna now smiled, in a rather unnerving way as she added in a matter of fact way, just to scare him, "oh and do remember that a mother can be fiercely protective of her children," eyes twinkling dangerously Jenna took a single step towards him to make him jump but then let out a hearty laugh dropping the tough mother act and naturally smiling, "I had you worried for a minute there didn't I Deryn? I've got to say that Rebecca told me only good things about you, but you did only meet last night, you do remember that right? Or maybe you could go out with her sober? Just a suggestion." She laughed now hoping he'd learnt a lesson from it all and hoping that maybe, just maybe he'd phone Becky, she'd put on a brave face if he didn't but Jenna knew that deep down she'd be hurting, and that's why she was going to such lengths to try protecting her beloved daughter.

The more he tried to remember this person, the more of a headache he got. "Maybe I shouldnt think right now..." He mumbled to himself as he rubbed his temple hoping the asprin would kick in sometime soon. Deryn couldnt hold a decent and serious conversation in this state, let alone work tonight. As soon as the 'W' word came into his mind he groaned again and looked up at the clock on the kitchen wall. It was only 10AM and he wasnt working during the day, it was the night shift so he didnt need to worry much just yet. It was when it was getting close to 10PM that he would start to worry if this headache hadnt cleared. Deryn needed a clear head when going on field work, he knew he wouldnt be much help to Vinnie and the others if he was still hungover, and knowing Deryn's luck, he would get them all killed, which was never a good thing to happen and since Vinnie was Deryn's best friend, if Vinnie died, Deryn would go mad.
As he walked down the hall, very unsteadily, he had to hold onto the wall for support as it felt his knees were going to buckle. Did he really drink that much last night? No, he was sure he hadnt. He took out one hundred quid, and he was paying for a girls drinks all night last night, he had still come home with just over thirty pounds. Which was an achievement for Deryn when he was alone, let alone when he was buying some girl her drinks. Wait. A memory! He remembered buying some girl drinks all night, now if he could only remember her face. Sharp pain. Ouch, Maybe I'll try to remember later. "Right, yeah" Deryn answered, "Sorry. Tea then?" He asked as he opened the cupboard. Ah. His supply of vodka and other alcoholic beverages had all gone. They had clearly drank his flat dry.
After a while, Deryn was sat still once more. He heard her say she didnt want him to know about her being married. Well this certainly put a spin on Deryn's lovelife. At least he knew if some angry person began to beat on him, he would probably know why, even if he didnt remember doing it. "If I'd have known you were married, the only thing that would have been different is, I wouldnt have slept with you." Deryn gave a weak smile and looked down into the murky liquid. "I'd have still spoken to you." Deryn couldnt understand why married women went looking for other guys, if they werent happy in their marriage why didnt they just divorce? Deryn had never been in love so he couldnt judge, he wouldnt know what it was like to be in love in the first place to consider marrying someone. Though of course he wasnt about to rule it out just yet.
Deryn looked up with confusion as she went on to explain about her 'adoring husband' "But then why.. Me, you" Though no sooner had this come out had she dropped the bombshell, Deryn hadnt slept with her, he had slept with her daughter, and now he was meeting the parents, well parent, a lot earlier than Deryn would ever feel comfortable with. Deryn's mouth hung open as she asked him a question, his phone started to ring loudly and vibrate from the table in his bedroom. Standing up quickly, rather glad of the distraction he muttered a 'I'll just be a minute' and rushed out of the room to pick up his phone, hoping it was Vinnie, though the number came up annonymous. "Hello?" Came Deryn's shaky voice. "Hello Deryn, Its Kat" She sounded as tired as he was. "Hello sweet. You alright? Hows work? Have you been yet or are you throwing a sicky?" He was asking as many questions as he could to give him time to think of an answer for the woman sat in his kitchens question. "Thats an awful lot of questions Deryn." She laughed, "Im fine, just a little tired which is why I phoned in sick. Thankfully mum thinks im supposed to be off work today so she doesnt know. Im meant to be sleeping now but mums gone out somewhere so I thought I would steal her phone and phone you. That is alright, isnt it?" "Yes. Its fine. Look if your tired you should get some sleep, I have a few things to attend to, I'll call you tomorrow or during the week sometime" Deryn clicked down his phone and gave a shaky breath before heading back into the kitchen.
"You questions answer would definatly the first one." He said and put his phone on the table. "I would hate to have to tell a mother that, but I do call people back." He began to rub the temple in head again, this was turning into a bigger headache that Deryn could have ever possibly imagined, and before he knew it, he had completley drained his coffee. "I know how mothers can be." He said rather slowly and quietly. I've been faced with many before now. As Deryn stood up to make another cup of coffee, he turned to see the woman heading over his way and instinctivly he took a step backwards and knocked into the kitchen counter. "Uh," Deryn said, "Yeah you definatly did." Remind me not to piss her off. Though his brow furrowed and he shook his head slowly, "That cant be possible, you must have the wrong Deryn." He said simply, "I spent the night with someone called Kat. Though in all honesty I dont remember much of it. Bits and bobs coming back." He didnt know a Rebecca, he looked at his phone again which was on the table. ".." Deryn went to speak but no words came out, "I dont know a Rebecca. I havnt met a Rebecca before, Kat was with me all last night."

Well the charade was over now but that didn’t make things any easier, before she’d been pretending, putting on a show in order to protect her daughter, now she’d nearly run out of ideas and was beginning to wonder what to do next? Leave him in peace or torture him some more? Her just being there would be torture enough she imagined as the penny finally dropped, if she got around to telling Thomas about this he’d laugh his head off, after scolding her for ruining his fun; not letting him do the dirty work as it were.
She raised an eyebrow as he claimed he always called people back, a handsome young man calling someone back? That would be a first. But she nodded her head as if believing him, he seemed decent enough really though he could be saying anything to get himself of the deep hole he’d found himself in, it might even make him think twice before he beds the first girl he sees she thought with a wry grin that blossomed to a beautiful smile on hearing his comment about mothers, “you’ve no idea,” she laughed, “I feel insanely protective over Becky,” she neglected to mention the others, the less he knew about their family the better, she just had to make sure he hadn’t learnt of her extraordinary power, otherwise they’d really be in trouble. But how to go about finding out? That was the tricky thing, she couldn’t exactly ask, “so did she burn you at all?” Even anything less blaringly obvious could sow a seed of doubt in his mind and get him wondering, no it would have to be enough that there wasn’t any obviously burnt to a cinder in the place, laugh if you want but Becky had somehow managed to demolish a kitchen in a rage with an ex once; somehow he miraculously survived…all thanks to Jenna clearing up her daughter’s mess with her healing abilities. Stopping herself from gazing about the place she looked back to the young man her focus centering on him again. “Good,” she muttered glad she’d taken down any young man a peg or two, anyone between the age of 15 and 65 was a threat to Jenna’s eyes, sure she was paranoid but as much as Thomas told her to calm down, and as often as he reminded her how their daughters and son could look after themselves it still didn’t stop her worrying herself sick.
Everything had been going so well until everything turned on its head, “sorry?” She blurted out in shock, wondering if she’d heard him correctly, don’t tell me I’ve got the wrong guy! she screamed to herself as he continued saying he’d in fact slept with someone called Kat instead Jenna’s mouth fell open…until it clicked, “wait a second, my daughter isn’t stupid…she’s given you a different name,” and damnit I’ve just given him her real name; way to go miracle mum she thought sarcastically to herself. It was her turn to feel uncomfortable as she barely touched the cup of scolding tea that had been placed before her, “well…anyway…just…just be careful around my daughter ok, around all girls in fact, but especially my daughter.” Abruptly she stood up beginning to excuse herself, this was just getting ridiculous now, “I’m late for work as it is…so thank-you for the tea, it was lovely meeting you…I’ll see myself out.” With that she strode purposefully from the room towards the front door, “just remember what I said.” Jenna called back as she left the house closing the door behind her and walking quickly down the street muttering to herself about her own stupidity, nosiness and inability to leave things alone.
